Ninth World Hindi Conference - Media Booklet

The 9th World Hindi Conference (WHC) is being organized from 22-24 September 2012 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The first World Hindi Conference was held in 1975 in Nagpur, India. Since then eight World Hindi Conferences have been held in different countries. This would be the first Hindi Conference to be organized in a country of African continent.

            Ministry of External Affairs is the nodal Ministry for the 9th World Hindi Conference. A Steering Committee and six sub-committees have been constituted in the Ministry of External Affairs to deliberate on various aspects relating to the conference. Hon'ble Minister of State for External Affairs Smt. Preneet Kaur is the Chairperson of the Steering Committee. This committee has 14 official and 23 non-official members.


In South Africa, the High Commission of India in Pretoria is the coordinator for the conference in Johannesburg. The High Commissioner of India in Pretoria, H.E. Shri Virendra Gupta is the Patron of the local Organising Committee and he is closely supported by the Consulate General of India and the Indian Cultural Centre in Johannesburg in this endeavour. Hindi Shiksha Sangh, a local organization is the partner organization for the conference.


            The main theme of the conference is 'Bhasha ki Asmita aur Hindi ka Vaishvik Sandarbh' . There will be nine academic sessions. The topics of the academic sessions will be :


  1. Mahatama Gandhi ki Bhasha Drishti Aur Vartaman ka Sandarbh.
  2. Hindi : Film, Rangmanch Aur Manch ki Bhasha.
  3. Soochna Praudyogiki : Devnagari Lipi Aur Hindi ka Samarthya.
  4. Loktantra Aur media ki Bhasha ke Roop Mein Hindi.
  5. Videsh Mein Bharat : Bharatiya-Granthon ki Bhoomika.
  6. Gyan Vigyan Aur Rozgar ki Bhasha ke Roop mein Hindi.
  7. Hindi ke Vikas Mein Videshi/Pravasi Lekhakon ki Bhoomika.
  8. Hindi ke Prasar Mein Anuwaad ki Bhoomika.
  9. Dakshin Africa mein Hindi Shiksha Yuvaon ka Yogdan.


In recognition of the long-drawn struggle for peace, non-violence, equality and justice for all mankind by Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa who was deeply influenced by the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the venue for inauguration of the conference has been named as Gandhigram, plenary hall as Nelson Mandela Sabhagar and other venues as Shanti, Satya, Ahinsa, Niti, and Nyaya.


            The venue of the conference is Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.


            There will be three exhibitions on namely, Hindi literature, use of Hindi in Information Technology and various tools. These will be put up jointly by Mahatma Gandhi Anterrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha, Kendriya Hindi Sansthan and National Book Trust. An exhibition on the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi will be organized by the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti.


            At the exhibition venue there will be a separate area designated for book releases where release of Hindi books and magazines will go on simultaneously.


            During the first two days of the conference there will be cultural programmes in the evening before dinner. There will be performances by artists both from India and South Africa. A kavi Sammelan will also be organized. The cultural programmes and the Kavi Sammelan will be organized by Indian Council for Cultural relations.


            A daily news letter (Sammelan Samachar), a Sammelan Smarika and a Conference Report on discussions held during the academic sessions and their recommendations would also be published. The Sammelan Samachar and the conference report will be published by Mahatma Gandhi Anterrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha. The Sammelan Smarika will be edited by a Board Headed by Dr. Ravindra Kalia, Director, Bhartiya Gyanpeeth.

            In keeping with the past practice Hindi scholars from India and other countries would be honoured for their distinguished service in the field of Hindi.  

            A website has been developed separately for the conference which can be visited at vishwahindisammelan.gov.in for all relevant information relating to the conference.
