The official delegation was led by Minister of State for External Affairs, Shri Anand Sharma. There were 114 Members in the official delegation, out of which only 84 delegates participated in the conference.

 

Inauguration

The conference was inaugurated on July 13, 2007 in a conference room of the United Nations Organisation Headquarter . The Chairman at the inauguration ceremony was Minister of State for External Affairs Shri Anand Sharma

Closing ceremony

Closing ceremony was held on July 15, 2007. Dr. Lakshmimall Singhvi was the Chairman of the closing ceremony. However due to ill-health his speech was read out by Dr. Kanhaiyalal Nandan, renowned Hindi scholar, litterateur and journalist.

 

Welcome address was by Dr. Madhukar Rao Choudhury, Chairman, Rashtra Bhasha Prachar Samiti, Wardha.

Honouring of scholars

20 Indian scholars and 20 foreign scholars were honoured for their distinguished services in the field of Hindi. However, only 15 Indian and 14 foreign scholars were present to receive the honour.

Three exhibitions were organised.

 

  1. Book exhibition jointly by National Book Trust and Kendriya Hindi Sansthan.

 

  1. An exhibition on Hindi and Information Technology and other tools.

 

 

  1. An exhibition on ancient manuscripts and development of Hindi. The exhibition was put up by National Archives of India, Dept. of Culture.

  3. Sitar Vadan by Shujat Hussain Khan

 

 

Scholars Honoured

40 Hindi scholars were honoured in the conference for their distiguished contribution in the field of Hindi. These included 20 foreign scholars and 20 Indian scholars.

(5 Indian and 6 foreign scholars could not be present to receive the honour)

Other features

In the run up to the conference an All India Hindi Essay competition was held for the youth in India. This competition was for both the Hindi and non-Hindi speaking youth. The Ministry facilitated participation of the two winners (one Hindi speaking and one non-Hindi speaking) in the 8th WHC in New York.
